Is Summer a Good Time to Have Furnace Maintenance Done?

June 24, 2025

Summer is just about here in the northern hemisphere. Maybe you’re thinking about having your furnace maintenance taken care of early this year. You are wondering whether summer is a good time to have the work done.

Early fall might be the optimal time for furnace maintenance, but having it done during the summer is not a bad option either. In fact, there are some very good reasons to choose summer over early fall. Some of those reasons are explained below. As you read, keep in mind that Comfort Solutions offers heating and cooling services throughout the Wasatch Front region of Utah.

1. An Easier Time Scheduling

Summer tends to be the slowest part of the year for HVAC in our corner of the world. It is not that Utah homeowners do not have air conditioning, it’s that air conditioning is not as universally adopted in the Beehive State compared to states in warmer climates. With fewer AC units to worry about, techs have more time to devote to heating.

The closer we get to the fall, the more furnace maintenance jobs will be on the calendar. So the later we go in the year, the tighter scheduling becomes. Having furnace maintenance done in the summer usually means having the pick of the litter in terms of appointment dates and times.

2. Early Detection Can Help

Furnace maintenance is a lot like preventative healthcare. In other words, early detection can help when it comes to the types of problems that cause furnaces to go down in the winter. Early detection is even more important if you need repairs requiring ordered parts.

Having maintenance done in the summer gives us more time to get those parts ordered. You don’t risk cold nights and early mornings waiting for parts to arrive.

3. Flexible Repair Schedules

With more time on the calendar to deal with maintenance and repairs, summer affords the opportunity to be more flexible. Once temperatures start to drop, the need for repairs becomes more pressing. But over the summer months, you have some breathing room.

Let’s say routine furnace maintenance reveals a problem requiring a scheduled repair. You are planning to go on vacation in a couple of days, so you would rather schedule the work for a week or two after your return. We have that kind of flexibility during the summer.

4. Being Prepared Is Always Good

Last but not least is the reality that being prepared for winter is always a good idea. Preparation is the main reason behind routine furnace maintenance. By making sure your furnace is in good working order before temperatures start falling, you can rest comfortably in the knowledge that it will work as intended once pressed into service.

A Word About Fall Maintenance

There are very good reasons for scheduling furnace maintenance during the summer. Early fall is still the recommendation among most HVAC professionals. The reason is pretty simple: leaving maintenance until early fall encourages a final tune-up and check before furnaces are pressed into action.

Any maintenance and repairs done during the summer are good, but they do not address that need for a final checkup just before winter hits. So ideally, fall is a better season for maintenance. That said, we are happy to schedule furnace maintenance during the summer months.
